Native Deodorant Review

Listen, I’m gonna keep this review honest. I’m a sweaty person. When I was in college, I had botox injections under my arms to keep my hyperhidrosis in check. I’m 30 now, and significantly less sweaty than I was then, so I haven’t had to repeat the (surprisingly, astoundingly painful) treatment. I settled in to alternating between Secret and Old Spice for a few years, until recently.

Natural deodorants are everywhere. Everyone’s touting how much better they are for you. I tried both Arm and Hammer and Tom’s a few years ago, and it was a terrible experience. I was sweaty, smelly, and just generally felt disgusting. I’d given up until everyone started talking about Native. I have extremely sensitive skin, so I thought I’d give it a try.

Y’all. It’s wonderful. They talk on the site (and the packaging) about how it takes a while for your body to adapt to switching from the chemical-y deodorants to natural deodorant, but for me it really didn’t. Maybe I’m an odd case, but it worked right off the bat for me. I have noticed that it doesn’t last as long, though. I only put deodorant on in the morning after showering, and when I was using Secret or Old Spice I would even wake up the next morning still smelling like a daisy. Now, I wake up smelly. I don’t mind that though, and it’s totally worth the compromise to use something I know is better for my body.

The scents. The scents! They’re amazing! I love them because even though they’re split into men’s and women’s, pretty much all of the scents are gender neutral. You can make a customized set including some men’s and some women’s, which I highly recommend. The travel sets are great for getting to smell a few without having to commit to full sticks.

The only downside about the scents is that so many of them are seasonal. My favorite is salt and cedar, and that one is gone for the time being. I certainly hope it will be back, but who knows? I was surprised by how much I like the coconut and honey, and by how much I don’t like the eucalyptus and mint (it smells like I smeared toothpaste under my arms.) The unscented for sensitive skin and charcoal are great options if you have a fragrance you like to wear, strong aftershave, etc.

There’s also a scent quiz you can take, and they’ll make you a custom scent. I was super skeptical, but I love what they ended up sending me, and it even coordinates with my signature fragrance! Also it has my name on it, which makes me unreasonably happy.

Native is great because they have a ton of sales and coupon codes floating around all the time, and they have built in savings when you subscribe. They have various other products that can be included in the deals – body wash, soap, and toothpaste – but I haven’t sampled those yet. I’ll be sure to update when I do!
